Larry Nowak

The Alberta Basketball Officials Association (ABOA) sadly announce the passing of a dedicated member official on Wednesday, July 1, 2020.

Larry Walter Nowak, beloved husband of Terry Nowak, of Cochrane, AB, passed away at the age of 70 years.
Larry was born in Wainwright, AB, on July 17, 1949. He grew up in Edmonton and attended the University of Alberta where he met Terry. Upon completion of his Education Degree, he worked as a teacher and administrator with the Edmonton Catholic School Board until his retirement in 2004. Larry loved being both a teacher and coach throughout his career.

He also had a passion for basketball. He began playing at O’Leary High School and later was proud to play as a Golden Bear for four years, including a trip to the CIAU Nationals in 1969. Larry’s basketball community is one that he valued his entire life.

Larry started officiating basketball in 1976 where his knowledge and skill for the game allowed him to enjoy a stellar career as a strong and fair referee for 30 seasons. He also used his leadership skills in service to his local board – Edmonton Basketball Officials Association and the ABOA where he served as Vice-President, President and Provincial Interpreter from 1981-1987.

He also served with the Alberta Basketball Association (ABA) and was a key member of the organizing committees for both the 1983 Universiade Games and the 1991 World Junior Men’s Basketball Championships.

On-court highlights included officiating many Canada West playoff series, refereeing ‘down under’ during a year-long sabbatical in Australia and being selected for the Gold Medal game at the 1994 CIAU Women’s National Championship. For this achievement he received ABOA’s National Award of Excellence. Upon retirement from active officiating, Larry was bestowed with an Honourary Life member award from the EBOA in 2004 and then received National recognition in 2007 when the Canadian Association of Basketball Officials (CABO) awarded him with the Wink Willox Award of Merit for on court proficiency along with Executive service to the development of officials.

Upon retirement, Larry and Terry relocated to Creston, BC where Larry became an active, contributing member of this community. Their acreage at the base of the Skimmerhorns brought him great joy. Just shy of a year ago, they moved back to Alberta to be closer to family, which was his first love.

After marrying Terry in 1972, they began their family, welcoming Janet in 1974, and twins Darcy and Doug eighteen months later. His enormous pride in his children spilled over to his devotion and support of his beloved grandchildren. Larry was their champion and biggest fan. He will be most remembered for being a genuinely good man with a huge heart, ready smile, and boundless pride.

A Celebration of Larry’s Life will be announced at a later date. Condolences, memories and photos may be shared and viewed on Larry’s obituary at www.McInnisandHolloway.com.
